RE: Home Emergency Generator Question

They are out there, but as has been said $5k-6k installed probably with transfer switch... I have a 10kw natural gas fired generator with a 200 amp whole house transfer switch. Cost about $5500 total for the generator and installation about 5 years ago.. Mine is a Briggs and Stratton unit with controls by Cutler Hammer.. http://www.homegeneratorsystems.com/index.cfm I doubt I will own another house without such a unit... Been worth every penny... RE: Alternative to XPS RIBS?

without going to 16" inch rims you are stuck with trailer tires, at least that is the conclusion I came to last summer... what I did is went with 10 ply, E-rated trailer tires... have to make sure your rims can handle 80psi.. the brands I found in my 15" size and e-rated were: Denman, Maxxis, Carlisle I ended up going with carlisle's just due to local availability... RE: Two passenger snowmobile?

2 ups are great for cruising... most have long tracks and can be very capable off trail as well. big issue is that they are bigger/heavier, so if you get them stuck off trail, it is harder to get out... Bryan PS Ski-doo all the way for sleds....

RE: Laptops Battery is dead, dead, dead

Our newer Toshiba laptop's manual says to take the battery out if using it on 120 VAC. I would agree with that, if you are using it like 90%+ of the time on AC, then periodically on battery.. Over time the battery in a laptop that is almost exclusively used on AC will die... Happened to my IBM... My wife primarily runs her laptop on AC and I make sure they at least once a week, she lets it run on battery, till it needs to be charged again... B

RE: GPS

I just bought a Magellan Roadmate 1412 I have a friend, who has a tom tom and really likes it.. when I went to buy one, I had the chance to test the roadmate 1412 and a similar garmin unit side by side... I have garmin units for off-road use and was sure I would like the garmin for road use, but found the magellan device a lot quicker to find things in... For example, in looking up my address, I started by entering the name of the town, in my case three letters... both brought up a list of 5-6 options, both had my town at the top of the list... next it would ask for street.. .The garmin basically asked for the entire street name, whereas the Magellan, gave me a pop-up of two streets, including mine after just a couple of characters... Then it automatically started the street number with an 87 which is the first two numbers of any house on my street. the garmin asked me for all four numbers.... Add to that the list of functions advertised between the two were identical and the magellan was $60-70 less, I went with it... Have had it a few weeks and love it.... My $.02 worth, Bryan PS about antenna coverage, I used my magellan in my hotel room last night and it was able to get a signal..

RE: Laptops Battery is dead, dead, dead

what kind of laptop is it??? For most, I would say yes, real way to find out is to try it... I did have a Sony laptop in the past that would not work on AC without a working battery... One reason I have not bought subsequent Sony laptops.... I have had a few laptops that I have run without batteries in the past... Most of the stores run them without batteries on their floor demos, so no one steals them...

RE: Chrome--have any of you used it?

I tried it for a few weeks... OK but went back to firefox... liked some things about it and not so much on others.. .Might try it again , in the next version... Still have it loaded on the PC if I need it and is another browser better than IE... Bryan

RE: Yet another winterizing question

I took an old piece of garden hose and rigged a quick connect air fitting onto it. Then I just screw it into the city water connection.. I only run about 10-15psi, all that is really needed to push the water out... I still pump in a bit of pink stuff through the water pump for belt and suspenders coverage... Bryan

RE: Magellen GPS.

not on the 4040, but I just bought a magellan 1412 this past weekend and here was my experience.. I compared a Garmin (206 or 260? can't recall exact model.) and the 1412 side by side.. same screen size, info cards on them were basically the same ... what I found was this. when entering a destination on the magellan it required less keystrokes to do so... seemed to be narrowing down the search every key I pressed.. I did the same process on both units side by side... So I have had it a whole 4 days now and I really like it. I have garmin units for off-road and they have been great too... lastly, but not necessarily the primary drive, but the magellan unit was about $60-70 less... I had a hard time deciding as I have read so many reports about different units.. I would say you have to put your hands on them to play with them... In this case with it being a gift that is harder to do... My $.02 worth, Bryan

RE: Eternabond as preventive maintenance?

I just finished mine this weekend... Took two full rolls, but removed the maxairs from my four vents, removed the cover from the fridge vent too. Did all four vents, the fridge, front and back seams, three plumbing vents, the TV antenna and the skylight... Really glad it is done for the winter... Bryan

RE: Anyone have exp towing with yukon xl?

Ours is over 8500lbs, but I pulled it twice... Was advertised with a dry weight of 7400lbs, We had an 01 Yukon XL at the time, rated for 8600lbs... Pulled it twice and got a diesel PU... Turns out the TT really weighed about 9500lbs.... I think you are pushing it for a 8500lb TT with a 1/2 ton Yukon XL... I noticed after 01, they started dropping the tow ratings on them too... RE: What Hitch and sway control does everyone use?

Airstream is now weighing trailers when they come off the production line. After the final touches are put on the trailer, it is weighed and a sticker is printed up. I wonder if that is a new practice across the industry??? I saw a few new TT's this year, from different companies that had bright yellow weight stickers talking about the real delivered weight and also mentioning keeping within tow capacities... Wish I had taken a picture of one of them... Bryan

RE: Cummins 5.9 or 6.7?

One thing I want to add is the EB, though I'm not sure it can be added to an 05/auto transmission setup like I have. There is no Dodge support for the EB with the auto tranny in 05. They were supposed to but never delivered the software... My father in law has a 05 and an EB physically installed, but has never used it, because the SW never became a reality... You could use and aftermarket lockup box to lockup the torque converter, but I had also hear one reason they never did it to the 05 was a thrust washer issue.. To my knowledge the 06 and early 07 were the only 5.9/auto combos that the brake was ok with.... Bryan
